What does website maintenance actually include?
“Maintenance” is a vague word that hides a lot of very specific work. In practice it means keeping four things true at once: your site is secure, it is fast, its data is accurate, and someone can change it when your business changes.
Most small businesses in India pay for a website once and then treat it as finished. It is not finished — it is running software with dependencies, a host, an SSL certificate and a database, all of which drift over time. The bill for ignoring that usually arrives as a compromised site, a Google warning, or a quiet slide in enquiries that nobody connects to page speed.
Why do websites break when nobody maintains them?
Four failure modes account for nearly everything I get called about.
Plugins and dependencies drift
A WordPress site with a dozen plugins is a dozen independent release schedules. Skip updates for six months and you are running known-vulnerable code; apply them all blindly and something breaks. Both failure modes are common and both are avoidable.
Security holes open quietly
Most site compromises are not targeted. Bots scan for known vulnerabilities in outdated plugins and themes, and take whatever answers. You usually find out when Google flags the site or your host suspends it.
Speed decays with content
A site that launched at PageSpeed 95 does not stay there. Every unoptimised image, embedded video and marketing script the team adds costs a little. Nobody notices the day it crosses into slow — they notice the enquiries dropping.
Backups that were never tested
Plenty of sites have backups running. Far fewer have ever restored one. A backup you have not tested is a hope, not a plan — and you find out which it is on the worst possible day.

Core, theme and plugin updates applied on a staging copy first where the stack allows it, so a bad release never lands straight on your live site. Dependency updates for Next.js builds handled the same way.

Login hardening, file permission checks, SSL validity, security headers, and malware scanning. If something does get in, cleanup and a root-cause fix so it does not simply happen again.
Backups that get restore-tested
Automated off-site backups, plus a periodic test restore. An untested backup is not a backup.

Monthly PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals checks against Google's thresholds — LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1 — with the regressions actually fixed, not just reported.
Analytics and tracking that stay correct
GA4 and Search Console kept working, conversion events verified rather than assumed, and a monthly read of what changed. Broken tracking is worse than no tracking, because you act on numbers that are wrong.

Final monthly figure depends on the size of the site and how much change you push through it. A brochure site sits at the bottom of the range; a busy e-commerce store with weekly updates sits higher.

How quickly do you respond when something breaks?
Site down
Jumps the queue ahead of everything scheduled. A site that is fully offline is losing you enquiries every hour it stays that way.
Security incident
Same priority as downtime. Cleanup starts immediately, root cause follows, and you get told plainly what was exposed.
Something broken but working around it
A form not sending, a page rendering wrong on mobile, tracking that has stopped. Handled within the working day wherever possible.
Scheduled changes
Content edits, new pages, updates. Batched and done within the normal cycle rather than interrupting fix work.
Being straight about hours: I work Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 19:00 IST. Within those hours you are dealing directly with the person who will fix the problem, not a ticket queue. Outside them I am not a staffed 24/7 helpdesk, and I would rather tell you that now than have you discover it during an incident. If your business genuinely needs round-the-clock cover, you need a team, and I will say so instead of taking the retainer.
Do I still need maintenance if my site is built on Next.js?
Less of it — but not none, and the difference is worth understanding before you pay for either.
A statically built Next.js site has no plugin surface. There is no admin login sitting at a predictable URL for bots to hammer, and no marketplace of third-party code with its own vulnerability history. That removes the single most common way small business sites get compromised, which is why maintenance on a Next.js build is usually lighter and cheaper than the same work on WordPress.
What it still needs: dependency updates when security patches land, monitoring that builds and deployments keep succeeding, Core Web Vitals checks as content and scripts accumulate, and analytics upkeep. Those are real jobs — they are just fewer jobs.
WordPress is not the wrong choice, and I build on it regularly. It simply carries a higher standing maintenance cost, and that belongs in the decision when you are choosing a platform rather than as a surprise a year later.
Can you take over a website someone else built?
Yes — a good share of this work is inherited sites, often after the original developer stopped replying.

Because you get the person doing the work, and you can reach them. Agency annual maintenance contracts typically route you through a ticket queue to a junior executive working from a checklist, where a text change takes a week and nobody can tell you why the site got slower.

What happens if my website gets hacked?
Cleanup, then root cause. Removing malware without closing the hole that let it in just buys you a few weeks. That means restoring from a clean backup where one exists, patching whatever was exploited, rotating credentials, checking for injected spam content and backdoors, and requesting review if Google has flagged the site. Prevention is cheaper: most compromises I see trace back to an outdated plugin nobody was updating.
Why is my website suddenly slow when nothing changed?
Something almost always changed — just not in a way anyone logged. The usual causes are unoptimised images uploaded straight from a phone, a new marketing or chat script added by someone in the team, a plugin update that added bloat, a database that has grown without cleanup, or a host that quietly throttled you. A Core Web Vitals check will normally point at the cause within an hour.
Do you set up Google Analytics and Search Console?
Yes, and more importantly I verify they are recording what you think they are. GA4 that is installed but has no key events configured tells you traffic went up while telling you nothing about enquiries. Setup covers GA4, Search Console, GTM where it is warranted, and conversion events tested end to end rather than assumed to work.
Is there a lock-in contract on the monthly plan?
No. Care plans are month to month and you can stop whenever you want. I would rather keep clients because the work is worth paying for than because they signed something. If you stop, you keep everything already done — the hardening, the fixes and the tracking setup all stay in place.
